Announcement #2.5: ChatGPT

My temporary strategy is flat-out IP banning Microsoft and OpenAI from accessing the website. I'm still thinking of a more long-term solution to the problem, feel free to contact me if you have any ideas or contribute to the source code directly by forking the Git repository.

Silicone Valley Bank

Unless you live under a rock you've probably heard that Silicone Valley Bank collapsed recently. The question remains, What exactly caused the bank to fail? Banks are businesses and like every business, they need to make money. Most of the time banks do this by investing the money people deposit. These investments can be anything, from stocks to real estate. As long as the bank can guarantee the money will be there when people go to spend it or withdraw it everything is copasetic. In the case of Silicone Valley Bank, they chose to invest in bonds. Unfortunately for them, their investments didn't go as planned. The bonds they bought were for 3-5 years but when everyone came asking for their money, Silicone Valley Bank couldn't provide it. This led to the bank shutting down and unfortunately for the people who used the bank, their money is just gone. This is where things took a turn for the worst. Normally the money in a bank is insured by the FDIC but in the case of Silicone Valley Bank, each account was only insured up to $250,000. To make matters even worse a good portion of Silicone Valley Bank's customers were tech companies in the area. You can imagine how much money was in these accounts and just how bad things are for them now that this money is gone. A lot of these nearby companies said they wouldn't be able to make payroll because of the money the bank lost. The good news is assuming you're a person, not a business you're most likely fine keeping your money in your bank account. But it is a lesson in putting all your eggs in one basket.

EXPLAINATION

Hi, my name is Jaden. I am the creator of this platform. I've been programming for 5 years now and it's something I love to do. Basically, I got tired of people posting paragraphs on Instagram and Snapchat and I really don't like people trying to break up a long thought into multiple tweets. If you want a place to fully express a lengthy idea, Opium is the place. Another thing I don't like is people impulse-posting to social media without fully thinking through what they're putting into the world. That's the point of the embargo. Currently, it takes 3 days for a capsule to leave the embargo and be public. While a capsule is in embargo it isn't visible to anyone else on the platform. It also is the only time you can delete a capsule. After a capsule leaves the embargo it cannot be deleted or edited in any way. The most important thing to keep in mind is to think before you post. Whatever you say is going to be out there forever. You can't delete your account and you can't delete any of your capsules. You have 3 days to reconsider but after that it's permanent. As the admin, I have the ability to delete capsules but I won't unless the capsule violates one of the rules. There are three rules on Opium. You can't post anything that aims to directly insight violence, you can't post leaked government documents, and you can't post copyrighted material you don't have permission to use. Everything else is fair game. You'll most likely see me posting on here from time to time and I can't wait to see what you write. If you have any questions or concerns you can email me at contact@opium.press.

Feb 22, 2023 06:53 PM #album review
Let's Start Here - Lil Yatchy

I know I'm late to the party when it comes to this review. I wanted to live with this album for a while and see how well it ages. Easily the most stand-out feature of this album is the production. From front to back, this album sounds like a masterpiece of progressive rock production. What impressed me the most about this was the fact that on nearly every song, Lil Yachty himself has a production credit. In addition to that, a plethora of other artists were credited for their production contributions. While it's easy to count that against yachty with the mindset of "why didn't he produce the whole thing himself", it takes an incredible amount of talent to gather that many artists and coordinate them to make one cohesive project. It's very clear his time spent working with Kanye on Donda paid off drastically. This whole album seems like a true labor of love. The thought that captivated my mind throughout the whole listening experience was "Why did he do this? Lil Yachty didn't have to do this". In truth he didn't, he's seen more success in his career than most people ever will yet still he had the passion to completely reinvent himself. The build-up to this album was crazy to experience firsthand. It started with the Poland leak. At the time I remember thinking "this is a fun Lil Yachty song", not knowing that the vocal effects he experimented with in that song would play a central role in his next album. Then Drake's album 'Her Loss' released with Lil Yachty having production credit on arguably 3 of the best songs on the album. If anything I expected Lil Yachty to continue that sound that he struck gold with. Then the album was released and it was a complete departure from anything I expected. There's something so beautiful about that. Like a magician carefully using misdirection to guide the audience's focus away from the reality of things only to finally reveal the true outcome of the trick. I feel bamboozled, hoodwinked, and hornswoggled in the best way possible. I've heard a lot of criticisms of this album specifically in regard to Lil Yachty's voice. I simply just disagree, I like his voice throughout the album. I will say that the album is a little lacking in replay value to me although that could be a personal preference. I feel like this album is best enjoyed all together in one listen rather than listening to individual songs but that's extremely subjective. Other than that I feel like the message told throughout the album comes off a little forced at times but that's clearly not the main focus. Overall I'm extremely impressed. I've gained a new respect for Lil Yachty as an artist and I can't wait to see what he puts out next. Favorite Songs - the BLACK seminole. - pRETTy - IVE OFFICIALLY LOST ViSiON!!!!

Change Log #4: Rebrand + More

After much consideration I decided to rename "essays" to "capsules". Something about "essay" just sounded too formal and gave people the wrong impression about what the platform is meant to be. A capsule is the same thing as an essay. It's still a container for whatever ideas you chose to express just under a new name. A lot of changes on the backend were made to accommodate the change as well as further optimize the performance of the platform.
